What is the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program?

To help with the growth of Alberta economy, the government of Alberta has started the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) to attract and retain hard working people to the province of Alberta.

The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program allows skilled and semi-skilled workers to apply for permanent residency once nominated by the government of Alberta. The applicant can apply for AINP either by themselves or through an employer depending which stream they select.

For the purpose of this blog focus will be only on Strategic Recruitment Stream and under this stream you can apply on your own.

What is the Strategic Recruitment Stream?

When applying under the Strategic Recruitment Stream you do not need employer present meaning you can simply apply on your own in the following categories:

• Compulsory and Optional Trades Category
• Engineering Occupations Category
• Post Graduate Worker Category

Compulsory and Optional Trades Category Qualification Criteria

• These criteria apply to all supervisors, foremen and tradespeople working in a Compulsory or Optional Trades in Alberta

• Be a temporary foreign worker

• Have valid trade certificate in a in a compulsory or optional trade in Alberta issued or recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT). Your application will be refused if you do not have Alberta Qualification Certificate or an AIT Recognized Trade Certificate when you apply to the AINP
• Your intent is to work and permanently live in Alberta should you get nominated by the province
• When you apply for AINP you must be currently living in the province of Alberta at the time of your application
• Have a valid work permit that was issued by IRCC that allows you to work in Alberta in a trade that you are certified in
• At the time you submit your application you must show that you are currently working in your trade occupation with an employer in Alberta OR show that you have previously worked in your trade for an employer in Alberta for minimum of 6 months in the past 2 years.
• If you are working in semi-skilled occupation such part technician you would have to meet language requirements that is set out Semi-Skilled Worker Category criteria page for AINP
• There are three accepted language tests which include CELPIP, IELTS and TEF you can choose from. These results cannot be older than two years when submitting your AINP application

Engineering Occupations Category Qualification Criteria

• To qualify under the Engineering Occupations Category you need to be a foreign worker in Alberta and have work experience in an eligible engineering occupation.

• As the foreign worker you must be currently living in the province of Alberta
• Your intent has to be to live permanently in the province of Alberta as the foreign worker
• Provide proof as the foreign worker that you have the education/training and experience as the engineer, designer or drafter
• In the past two years you have been in Alberta you must have worked with an employer in Alberta either directly or on contract basis
• Your occupation must fall under Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) Recruitment Stream Engineering Occupation List
• If your work experience falls under NOC 0211, 2131, 2132, 2133, 2134, 2141, 2143, 2144, or 2145 and you have the engineering credentials, you have to provide a “Letter of No Objection” from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta(APEGA) or show that you are registered with APEGA as a foreign licensee.
• If your occupation falls under NOC 2231, 2232, 2241 or 2253 you are not required to have a “Letter of No Objection” from APEGA.If you are an engineer but your NOC code is not on the Engineering Occupations List, you may qualify to submit an AINP application under the Skilled Worker category of the Employer-Driven Stream.

Post Graduate Worker Category Qualification Criteria

• To qualify for Post-Graduate Worker Category you need to have Post-Graduation Work Permit and are currently working Canada. Also, you must have graduated from a post-secondary school that is recognized in Canada.

• As the applicant you must show your intent is permanently live in the province of Alberta
• Are working full-time with an employer in Alberta at the time of your application
• Have completed your education in one of AINP approved Alberta public and private post-secondary institutions and have obtained certificate, diploma, degree in your field
• The program you studied must be at least one year (minimum of two semesters of full time study or equivalent) in length
• Have a valid Post-Graduate Work Permit issued by IRCC
• Your occupation must fall under of the NOC skills levels

• • NOC 0: Management occupations
  • NOC A: Occupations that usually require university education
  • NOC B: Occupations that usually require college education
  • NOC C: Occupations that usually require specific training and/or secondary education.If your occupation falls under NOC C, you must include your original test results to demonstrate you meet minimum language requirements. Also, your language test results cannot be older than two years at the time of your AINP application. Test results that are only accepted include CELPIP, IELTS or TEF.

Who is not eligible to apply under AINP Strategic Recruitment Stream?

• Persons that have claimed refugee status
• Persons involved federal appeal or removal orders
• Live in caregivers that are currently residing in Canada
• Temporary Foreign Workers that work and live in Canada but do not reside in the province of Alberta
• International students that are studying in Canada and have co-op work placements or internships as part of their study program.

Make sure you meet all the requirements before you apply, should you not meet the requirement criteria your application will be refused. Submit a complete error free AINP application to avoid delays in processing

Also, meeting all the requirements does not guarantee nomination or permanent residency for Canada.
