Are you looking at applying for a Permanent Residency Card? A lot of people call me with having a PR card being expired. Having a PR card expired does not mean that your status is expired as well. If you meet your residency obligation of 730 days in the last five years, which is 2 years out of the 5, you are eligible to renew your PR card. The processing times to renew your PR card is approximately six months. If you have a travel date or something, make sure you apply for the PR card renewal as soon as possible. If you have an urgent travel date make sure you include that in a cover letter, include any itinerary that demonstrates that you do have a scheduled travel date. That usually expedites the processing times, before the renewal.
Also, what’s important with the PR card renewal, is if the card has expired and you meet the residency requirements which is the two years out of the five, you can still apply for the renewal. Many believe that just because their card has expired they have to re-apply for PR card which is not the case. So, if you’ve resided in Canada for more than two years out of five years and your PR card has expired you can still apply for a regular PR Card Renewal, make sure to complete the form and include all the necessary documents when submitting your application.
Having the card expired doesn’t mean that your status as permanent resident also expires so you just file a straight forward PR Card Renewal application.
