Applying at a Port of Entry for TRP or Criminal Rehabilitation

If you have been Denied Entry to Canada for a criminal record such as DUI, felony, misdemeanor, assault charge, misrepresentation or whatever the reason may be you can either apply for a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) or Criminal Rehabilitation. TRP helps you overcome your inadmissibility issue for temporary basis and can be applied at the Port of Entry or the Consulate. TRP’s are issued for one day to a maximum of 3 years depending what your offense or offenses on record is and reason for travelling to Canada. When you apply at the  Canadian Port of Entry you get same day decision on your application while submitting at the Consulate processing times can take from 8-12 months to get a decision on your application. If you come from a non-visa exempt country such as Pakistan or India then you have no choice but to apply the consulate.

Criminal Rehabilitation on the other hand helps you overcome your inadmissibility on permanent basis if approved and as long as you do not re-offend. Criminal Rehabilitation can only be filed at the Consulate and therefore you have to wait 8-12 to get decision on the application.
