Basics of the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program

How to Immigrate to Prince Edward Island through PNP

The province of Prince Edward Island is stated to be the “birthplace” of Canada; it is one, if not the most, historical and old provinces in Canada. Prince Edward Island held the Charlottetown conference which essentially led to Canada’s formation. Additionally, Prince Edward Island has one of Canada’s most beautiful coasts and luscious farmlands but also has a growing economy based on fishing, agricultural as well as tourism. Foreign nationals who are applying through the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP) have five different ways to obtain permanent residency in Prince Edward Island. Under this program, Prince Edward Island chooses individuals who have a connection with Prince Edward Island and may contribute to its growing economy. In this article, I will address what the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP) is and the five different ways to gain permanent residency in Prince Edward Island.

What is the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP)

The Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP) is an economic immigration program that assists the province of Prince Edward Island to meet its labour market needs and prioritizes economic development within the province of Prince Edward Island. The program essentially allows Prince Edward Island to nominate skilled foreign nationals to the federal government for permanent residency. In other words, the program facilitates the province of Prince Edward Island to nominate foreign nationals who acquire skilled work experience and who qualify under the provincially established criteria to work in Prince Edward Island and obtain permanent residency in Canada. These individuals will then, in turn, be able to contribute to Prince Edward Island’s economy.

How does the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP) Work

If you receive a nomination from Prince Edward Island, then you may apply for permanent residency in Canada. A requirement of the PEI PNP is that you must show an intent to reside in the province of Prince Edward Island. Additionally, a benefit of the program is that your spouse or common law partner, as well as any dependent children, may also apply for permanent residency in Canada, if you are nominated. Please note that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) ultimately make the final decision on all permanent residency applications in Canada.

The Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP) offers nominations in its own immigration streams that target certain groups such as PEI Express Entry, Skilled Workers Outside Canada, Critical Workers, Atlantic Immigration Pilot for Employers-Designation, and 100% Ownership Stream. As previously mentioned, under the PEI PNP, there are five different ways that you can apply for permanent residency in Prince Edward Island; therefore, it is best to comprehend what all of them have to offer before applying for the one that best suits you.

Pathways under the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP)

There are five different pathways that you can apply for under the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP). Below, I will list and describe the different streams in detail.

PEI Express Entry

This specific stream is intended for foreign nationals that would like to potentially receive a nomination for permanent residency through the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP) specifically through the Express Entry immigration selection system. Foreign nationals who are nominated through the PEI PNP will ultimately have a higher chance of being invited to apply for permanent residency by the Federal Government of Canada.

Skilled Workers Outside Canada

This specific stream is intended for foreign nationals who have skilled work experience and who also have obtained a valid job offer from a Prince Edward Island employer. This specific stream is employer-driven which essentially allows employers from Prince Edward Island to fill high-skilled positions that are unable to be filled by Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada in the local job market.

Critical Workers

This specific stream is intended for foreign nationals who are already working in the province of Prince Edward Island. It is very important to distinguish that the foreign national that is working in PEI must have proper authorization to work i.e. a work permit. This specific stream is employer-driven which essentially allows Prince Edward Island employers to fill low-skilled positions that are unable to be filled by permanent residents of Canada or Canadian citizens in the local job market.

Atlantic Immigration Pilot for Employers-Designation

This specific stream is intended to fill permanent labour shortages as well as skill gaps in Prince Edward Island businesses by assisting foreign nationals to obtain permanent residency in Canada. The Atlantic Immigration Pilot is very employer-driven and is a federal immigration pilot program. Within this specific stream, there are three different sub streams that address different needs of the province. The Atlantic High Skilled Programs allows PEI businesses to attract highly skilled foreign nationals; the Atlantic Intermediate Skilled Program allows PEI businesses to attract semi-skilled foreign nationals; and, the Atlantic International Graduate Program allows PEI businesses to attract recent graduates from Atlantic Canada universities or colleges.

100% Ownership Stream

This specific stream is intended for foreign nationals who would like to own and operate their own business in the province of Prince Edward Island. Individuals that would like to apply under this specific stream must have extensive management experience and/or business ownership experience and wish to operate and own their own business within Prince Edward Island.
