Basics of the Yukon Nominee Program

How to Immigrate to Yukon through PNP

The territory of Yukon is known as Canada’s Wilderness City. If you are a foreign national that enjoys snow all year round, with the exception of July, the Yukon is made for you. In addition to the snowy scenary, Yukon also has the summer solstice and the winter solstice can bring different lengths of days and can be an interesting change of lifestyle. Foreign nationals who are applying through the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) have four different ways to gain permanent residency in the Yukon. Under this program, Yukon chooses individuals who have a connection with the territory of the Yukon. In this article, I will address what the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) is and the four different ways to gain permanent residency in the Yukon.

What is the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP)

The Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) is an economic immigration program that assists the territory of the Yukon to meet its labour market needs and helps prioritize economic development within the Yukon. It also supports foreign nationals by offering an alternate and quicker entry into Canada for permanent residency. The YNP is administered by the government of the Yukon and runs in partnership with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The program facilitates the territory of Yukon to nominate foreign nationals with skilled work experience and who qualify under the established criteria to work in the Yukon and obtain permanent residency. In turn, these individuals will then be able to contribute to Yukon’s economy.

How does the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) Work

If you receive a nomination from the territory of Yukon, then you may apply for permanent residency in Canada. You must demonstrate an intent to reside in the Yukon. A benefit of this program is that your spouse or common law partner, as well as any dependent children, may also apply for permanent residency in Canada, if you are nominated.

The Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) offers nominations in its own immigration streams that target certain groups such as Skilled Workers, Express Entry candidates, Critical Impact Workers, and Business Nominees. As previously mentioned, under the YNP, there are four different ways that you can apply for permanent residency in the Yukon; therefore, it is best to comprehend what all of them have to offer before applying for the one that best suits you.

Pathways under the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP)

There are four different pathways that you can apply for under the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP). Below, I will list and describe the different streams in detail.

Skilled Worker Program

This specific stream is intended for skilled foreign nationals with qualified work experience that fall under occupations that fit into the National Occupational Classification (NOC) level A, B or 0. The foreign national must satisfy all of the requirements of the job description which has to match the NOC code in order for the territory of Yukon to nominate them. Specifically for this stream, both foreign nationals and Yukon employers can participate.

Express Entry

Similar to the Skilled Worker Program, this specific stream is intended for skilled foreign nationals with qualified work experience that also fall under occupations that fit into the National Occupational Classification (NOC) level A, B or 0. However, these foreign nationals must also register for an online profile in the Express Entry immigration selection system which is administered and run by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The foreign national can also apply under three different economic immigration programs through the Express Entry system which include: the Federal Skilled Worker Program; the Federal Skilled Trades Program; and, the Canadian Experience Class.

Critical Impact Worker Program

This specific stream is intended for skilled foreign nationals with qualified work experience that fall under occupations that fit into the National Occupational Classification (NOC) level C or D. For foreign nationals who are currently residing in Canada and would like to apply under this specific stream, you must maintain a valid work permit during the YNP application process. If the foreign national does not already have a valid job or is not currently residing in Canada, they must obtain a valid job offer from a Yukon employer in order to qualify.

Business Nominee Program

This specific stream is intended to attract and obtain skilled foreign national entrepreneurs to add diversity and innovation into the territory of Yukon’s economy. The foreign national that receives a nomination under this specific stream must receive support for a work permit of two-years in length. During this time, the foreign national and any accompanying family members but establish themselves and their business within the territory of the Yukon. The business that is established must fit into eligible sectors and may be either established or purchased from an existing business owner. In any case, the foreign national must actively operate the business and must not passively invest in the business without operating it.
