Eligibility and Qualifications for Provincial Nomination Program

Are there special immigration procedures for different provinces in Canada?

Yes, there are. There have been certain provinces that have received authority by Citizenship and Immigration Canada to be able to select or nominate you to be able to immigrate to their province under a program called Provincial Nomination Program.

Why the Provincial Nomination Program?

This program is used to allow the provincial and territorial governments to more efficiently as well as effectively welcome you to their region- whether it be a province or territory.

In order for all of the different provinces and territories in Canada to select you, you have to demonstrate your interest in settling in there.

Each different province/territory has a program that is specifically set up for them in terms of their economic needs. It is designed in this manner so that the province that chooses you will ensure that you will be able to settle in there and help their economy in the process. They will pick you in terms of the work experience, as well as how they feel you could contribute to the province or territory.

What categories for immigration are involved in the Provincial Nomination Programs?

There are several various streams in which you can apply to, but within the PNPs it usually falls into 5 main categories. These categories are:

  • Skilled Workers
  • Semi-skilled workers
  • Business/Investors
  • International student graduates, and;
  • Family or community connections

Are all provinces/territories a part of this program?

Most of them are, yes, but Quebec is not.

Quebec has a completely separate agreement with the Canadian Government, that allows them to choose you if you have shown an interest in living there. Quebec is unique in this regard.

Are their requirements the same as all the other provinces?

Aside from the Federal security clearance requirements and the medical examination requirements you will be subject to Quebec’s selection process.

You will also be required to pay an additional fee for the processing that will be done by the Quebec Immigration authorities.

If you meet requirements for other provinces will you meet them for Quebec?

That’s not exactly how this process works. Even though you may meet at the federal requirements you may not meet the requirements that are set out by the province of Quebec. It also works the other way around, if you meet all of Quebec’s requirements you may not meet all of the federal ones.

What provinces/territories exactly are involved in the Provincial Nomination Program?

The following provinces/territories participate with this program:

  • Alberta
  • Nova Scotia
  • British Columbia
  • New Brunswick
  • Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Northwest Territories
  • Ontario
  • Prince Edward Island
  • Saskatchewan, and;
  • Yukon
