Are you a foreigner who is looking to get Permanent Residence status in Canada? Canada’s immigration system is a generous immigration system that recognizes the importance of immigrants and their potential contribution to Canadian society. Keeping this in mind, Citizenship and Immigration Canada offers several different routes to seek entrance to Canada and to seek Permanent Residence in Canada.

If you are a skilled worker, meaning you have work experience in a skilled occupation, then you may be eligible to apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program. The Federal Skilled Worker Program requires that you have one year of continuous full-time (or equivalent part-time) paid work experience. If you have this experience in one of the occupations listed on the Federal Skilled Worker List of Eligible Occupations, then you are eligible to apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program.

The good news is that effective May 1, 2014, the List of Eligible Occupations under the Federal Skilled Worker Program has doubled. This means you have a greater chance of finding your occupation in this list.

The 2014 List of Eligible Occupations

The new 2014 list of Eligible Occupations includes job from different industries. Previously, with the older List of Eligible Occupations, many people often found that though they may have jobs similar to the List, but not the exact job that the List indicated. With the new List of Eligible Occupations, the scope of the types of jobs that are includes has broadened. Also, there are more occupations within a certain industry.

Many foreigners looking for Permanent Residence status in Canada come from and IT and/or computer background. Previously, not all IT, Engineering or Computer-related occupations were included in the List of Eligible Occupations. However, the new 2014 List of Eligible Occupations has included additional IT, Engineering and Computer-related jobs. If you are working in one of these type of occupations, then there is a greater chance now that your occupation is on the List of Eligible Occupations. This means your chances of being eligible to apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program has now increased.

The IT, Engineering, and Computer-related occupations in the new List of Eligible Occupations include:

  • Civil Engineers
  • Mechanical Engineers
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineers
  • Petroleum Engineers
  • Information Systems Analysts and Consultants
  • Software Engineers and Designers
  • Computer Programmers and Interactive Media Developers
  • Mechanical Engineering Technologists and Technicians
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technologists and Technicians
  • Computer Network Technicians
