Canada is a country that offers many opportunities. We have a comprehensive immigration system that acknowledges the value of having diverse individuals living in Canada. Canada also sees the value of allowing individuals who are skilled and trained in various trades and occupations to come to Canada. These types of individuals have the potential and capability of contributing to Canada’s thriving economy. Citizenship and Immigration Canada acknowledged the importance of skilled-workers by establishing the Federal Skilled Worker Program.

If you have work experience in an occupation that requires specific skills, training, and/or education, and you are looking to come to Canada as a Permanent Residence, then the Federal Skilled Worker Program may be an option for you. However, you are only eligible to apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program if:

  • You have a valid offer of arranged employment;
  • You are enrolled in a PhD program in Canada; or
  • You have one year continuous full-time paid work experience in one of the Eligible Occupations noted by Citizenship and Immigration Canada within the last ten years.

Eligible Occupations

Citizenship and Immigration Canada has established a list of Eligible Occupations under the Federal Skilled Worker Program. As of April 23, 2014, this list of Eligible Occupations has been expanded to include further occupations for a total of 50 Eligible Occupations. Effective May 1, 2014, the Federal Skilled Worker Program will be accepting a total of 25,000 new applications. A maximum of 1000 applications will be accepted for each of the 50 Eligible Occupations. If you have at least one year of continuous full-time (or equivalent hours of part-time) paid work experience, within the last ten years, in one of the occupation noted on the list, you are eligible to apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program for Permanent Residence status in Canada.
