How can I Get Nominated for the Province of Alberta

Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program AINP

The Alberta Immigration Nominee Program, or the AINP, is an economic based immigration program operated under the Government of Alberta and with accordance with the Federal Government of Canada’s Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada – the IRCC. The nominee program supports Alberta’s immigration program by inviting and retaining person with the skills and occupational expertise that will benefit Alberta’s economic growth through inviting ready to work immigrants to come stay in Canada and apply for Permanent Residency.

Individuals that meet eligibility criteria get invited by the Albertan Government, along with their spouse (a legally married and officially recognised partner) common law partners (a partner living with the applicant for a period of at least one year) and any dependent children ( a son or daughter is considered dependent if the child is below the age of 22 and does not have a spouse or common-law partner of their own, and is a full time student, and is greatly dependent on the parent for any sort of financial support before the age of 22, or was greatly dependent on the parent(s) and relied heavily on them for financial support before the age of 22 due to a physical and/or mental disability.

The Alberta Immigration Nominee Program offers options for the skilled and semi-skilled workers class. As an applicant, you might be eligible to apply independently on your own or with your employer. You will not be issued under an Alberta Immigration Nominee Program if the purpose of the nomination is to extend a Work Permit.

Throughout the application process, the applicant must maintain a positive standing work permit. Only applicants under the Strategic Recruitment Stream Occupations Category are not required from having an on-going work permit. During the time of your application, you must be able to provide a valid work permit or any relevant, valid, and recognised document that implies you have a work permit in the process, such document include:

  • A positive and valid Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
  • A document detailing that you are exempt from applying for and/or obtaining a Labour Market Impact Assessment as determined with the rules and regulations in accordance with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

However, not all those who are exempt from a Labour Market Impact Assessment are eligible to apply for a nomination under the Alberta Immigration Nominee Program. Individuals as such who are not eligible from the exemption include:

  • International students studying in Canada, and along with their program of study, are doing co-op work placements or an internship as part of their study degree
  • People who are performing charitable or any religious work
  • People who have to extensively support themselves while they are in Canada waiting for their application process to finish such as those seeking for a refugee claim (refugee claimants)

Stream and Categories under the Alberta Immigration Nominee Program

There are streams and categories under which applicant can apply for a nomination under the Albertan program the following are the categories and streams under the Alberta Immigration Nominee Program:

Strategic Recruitment Stream

Under the following categories you will have to apply on your own – without an employer – for the three different categories:

Compulsory and Optional Trades Category

Under this category, you may qualify if you are currently a Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) – a foreign national who has been allowed to stay, live, and work in Canada as in accordance with their entry agreement. For eligibility under this category, you must have a valid trade certificate in a compulsory or an optional trade as issued in Alberta or as officially recognised by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT). Apprenticeship here refers to a combination of on job training, gathering practical and applicable work experience, and suitable technical training related to an officially recognized and suitable for nomination occupation. People who train in Alberta under a trade become registered apprentices.

Engineering Occupations Category

Under this category, you may qualify if you are currently a Temporary Foreign worker- a foreign national who has been allowed to stay, live, and work in Canada as in accordance with their entry agreement. Additionally, you must also have attained practical work experience that was gained within Alberta within the field of Engineering in which you practice and the field of engineering under which you are applying for. Occupation here refers to the job under which you will be working for under the provincial nominations. The experience states must be consistent with this occupation.

Post Graduate Worker Category

Under this category, you may qualify for if you have a Post-Graduation Work Permit and are currently living in Alberta, and have graduated from an officially recognised post-secondary in Alberta. A post-secondary institution could include a college, university, trades learning, or continuous learning centres. A work permit is a document which states the terms and conditions issued by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) department or an immigration officer that entitles the bearer of foreign nationality to work temporarily in Canada

Employer Driven Stream

For the categories under this stream, you can apply for the Alberta Immigration Nominee Program with your employer and not on your own. There are three categories under this stream:

Skilled Worker Category

Under this category you may qualify for a nomination if you have been offered a full time job by a Canadian employer in Alberta and are currently working in an occupation that is officially recognized as a skilled trade. A skilled occupation is one which required a secondary school completion as well on the job occupation specific training, and that falls under the National Occupation Classification Code list (the NOC which states skilled occupation categories to be either C OR D

International Graduate Category

Under this category, you may qualify for a nomination if you are a recent graduate from a recognised post-secondary institution in Canada, and have a Post-Graduation work permit, and have been offered employment on a full time job basis by Canadian employer in Alberta in an occupation eligible for the Alberta Immigration Nominee Program. The occupation in which the full time employment basis has been offered must be consistent with the occupation under which the applicant plane to work in once approved for nomination and settling in Alberta. Also the relevant stated work experience must be consisted with the occupation under which the applicant applied for the nomination program.

Semi-Skilled Worker Category

Under this category, you may be eligible for nomination if you have been offered a permanent or full time job by a Canadian employer in Alberta and have worked or are going to work in a relevant semi-skilled occupation, and you must also be a temporary foreign worker (a foreign national who has been allowed to stay, live, and work in Canada as in accordance with their entry agreement). A semi-skilled occupation is one which required secondary school training and/or occupational based training, and/or on the job training. The occupation must also fall under the National Occupational Classification system (NOC) as either an NOC level of C OR D.

Self Employed Farmer Stream

You may qualify for a nomination under this stream if you are determined to have suitable and sustainable financial resources and the required farm management experience to perchance and establish a farm in Alberta.

Who is not Eligible for the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program?

Certain people and occupation holders are not eligible for a nomination under the Alberta Immigration Nominee Program. These include the following:

  • Clergy, elementary, and secondary school teachers, professional athletes, and dental laboratory bench workers
  • Refugee claimants or individuals involved in a federal appeal case or an issue of removal process. It is not the mandate of the AINP to intervene in the federal refugee claim, or to appeal or remove the process
  • Live in caregivers currently living in Canada
  • Temporary foreign workers worker (a foreign national who has been allowed to stay, live, and work in Canada as in accordance with their entry agreement) working and residing in a province other than Alberta
  • International students studying in Canada and doing co-op work placements or internships as part of the study program working towards their degree
