A Work Permit is a piece of documentation that authorizes an individual to work within Canada. Individuals who are not Permanent Residents or citizens of Canada must obtain a Work Permit in order to legally work within Canada. In most cases when individuals obtain a Work Permit, it is only valid for specific jobs and for a specific duration of time.
There are certain jobs that are exempt for the need to obtain a Work Permit. This list includes: athletes and coaches, aviation accident or incident investigators, business visitors, civil aviation inspectors, clergy, convention organizers, crew members, emergency service providers, examiners and evaluators, expert witnesses or investigators, family members of foreign representatives, foreign government officers, foreign representatives, health care students, judges, referees, and similar officials, military personnel, news reporters, film and media crews, performing artists, public speakers, students working off campus, and students working on campus.
However, in all cases if the individual is not from a visa-exempt country, they will need a Temporary Resident Visa in order to enter and stay in Canada legally for a specific duration of time.
Another name for a Canada Immigration Visa is a Permanent Resident Visa. A Permanent Resident visa allows an individual to work and live in Canada without being a citizen of Canada yet. A Permanent Resident does not have a time limit on how long there are allowed to stay. A Permanent Resident has many of the same obligations as a Canadian Citizen. A Permanent Resident of Canada is someone who has applied for and been approved for Permanent Resident status within Canada. A Permanent Resident is not yet a citizen. A Permanent Resident is still considered a citizen of another country. Individuals who obtain a Permanent Resident Visa are on the road to obtaining Canadian citizenship as well. Only individuals who hold Permanent Resident visas are able to apply for citizenship in Canada.
