How Provinces and Territories use the Express Entry System

Who uses the Express Entry System?

All of the Canadian Provinces and Territories use Express Entry, with the exception of Quebec and Nunavut who use their own system.

How does it work?

The Provinces and Territories are able to nominate you as an applicant through the Express Entry System in order for them to meet their provincial and local labour market needs.

If you get a nomination from a Province or Territory it means that you will be receiving additional points within the Comprehensive Ranking System. These points will go towards your application.

In turn, the points will mean that you will be receiving an Invitation to Apply for Permanent Residence during the next available draw.

What requirements do you have to meet?

In order for you to be selected from the Express Entry Pool you must meet requirements within one of the Federal Economic Immigration Programs. The three programs are:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program, and;
  • Canadian Experience Class

On top of Provinces and Territories managing their own Provincial Nomination Programs they also now set out a certain criteria that they use in order to nominate you within the Express Entry System.

What are your options?

There are two ways that you can go about completing this process. They are:

  • First, You may enter into the pool and then await your nomination from a Province or Territory, or;
  • The second way is to receive a nomination and then complete your Express Entry Profile

Either way you choose to do this process is acceptable.

The Provinces and Territories also reserve their right to make nominations under their regular PNP’s which are outside of the Express Entry. If they choose to make nominations this way they will come in the way of a paper application process.

What information should you include on your profile?

When completing your profile you want to include relevant information that you believe is going to help you continue with the process. Your profile should at least include:

  • Your skills
  • Your work experience- any that you may have
  • Your language ability- ensure to include any languages that you are comfortable with, even if they are not requirements they will help you gain points
  • Education- include your highest completed form of education
  • As well as any other information that you feel is relevant and would help impact your application in a positive way throughout this process
