There are many ways to apply for an Open Work Permit, the most common way of applying is being a dependent on a main applicants application that has either temporary or permanent status in Canada. For example, if your spouse is a foreign worker in Canada and is working on a Temporary Work Permit and that work permit is issued under NOC A, B or O you as the dependent could possible apply for Open Work Permit. If you have applied for Permanent Residence application from inside of Canada and you are the main applicant you could apply for Open Work Permit as well. Remember Open Work Permits are only issued to inland applications such Open Spousal Work Permit, Live in Caregiver Open Work Permit, the Federal Skilled Worker, the Canadian Experience Class, Provincial Nominee Programs (Open Bridging Work Permit) and Humanitarian and Compassionate applications.
Many of these categories under the permanent residence the first stage has to be approved called the Approved in Principle before you can apply for a Open Work Permit. The letter will state that the first stage of the application has been approved and you could apply for the Open Work Permit. If you forgot the immigration officer will state the instructions in the letter should be interested in applying for the Open Work Permit.
