A police clearance certificate is a copy of your criminal record or statement that shows whether you have a criminal record or not. Each country has it own requirements when it comes to obtaining a police clearance, you can visit CIC website for instructions on how to obtain one. Usually, you need to provide photo ID such as a passport, your fingerprints are taken in most cases, address, and paying applicable fees.
A police clearance certificate is needed from persons that are applying for Permanent Residence in Canada or you may also be asked for police certificate if you are travelling to Canada as visitor, foreign worker or student. Police clearances are needed from persons that have lived 6 months or more in country since the age of 18. For example, if you lived in country for 3 months then left for 2 years and came back and lived another 3 months that counts as 6 months, meaning you have to apply for police clearance.
