What Is The Federal Skilled Trades Program

Individuals who are qualified in a skilled trade and wish to gain permanent residency in Canada may apply under the Federal Skilled Trades Program. The application process for this has been bundled into the Express Entry program as of January 2015, along with the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Canadian Experience Class.

Express Entry is a process by which the above-mentioned classes of workers can apply for permanent residence in Canada with a fast-track method. Applicants create an online profile and are selected into a pool of eligible candidates for permanent residence based on certain criteria. This pool of eligible candidates is then ranked against each other using a point system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), and candidates that score the highest points are given invitations to apply for permanent residence. These candidates must apply within sixty (60) days or the invitation goes invalid.

From January 1, 2015, the Citizenship and Immigration Canada launched a new permanent residence program to handle the huge number of existing economic immigration programs (Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, Canadian Experience Class) applications, called Express Entry.

In order to comply with the local labour market requirements, all the provinces and territories will also be choosing candidates in conjunction with the Express Entry program.

The Express Entry is a new system that Immigration and Citizenship has created to make the process of gaining entry into Canada easier and faster. With this new system that the government of Canada has created is an electronic system where the entire process is done online. The Express Entry is created to manage permanent residence application for the different economic programs that Canada has:

• Federal Skilled Worker Program
• Federal Skilled Trades Program
• Canadian Experience Class

Each of these Economic programs come with their own specific criteria that has to be met when you are applying

Express Entry

If you are interested to apply under the Express Entry route, you will need you know the requirements of the Express Entry system. You have to comply with those requirements in order to be selected from the pool of candidates. These requirements are:

Language Proficiency:

You will need to take a language proficiency test. You will need to prepare yourself for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Once you have results, then Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will assess you through your test results whether you are eligible to immigrate to Canada under one of the Federal Programs that are part of the Express Entry system.
