There have been recent changes by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) in which certain occupation no longer qualify to apply for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). The reason for this change is because a study was done and statistics have shown that specific job duties can be done by citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Since these jobs can be filled by Canadians or permanent residents, service Canada no longer issues a LMIA for certain occupations. You can find the list on cic.gc.ca.
If you are under on of these particular NOCS it doesn’t necessarily mean that you know your out of luck it possibly means that we have to look at and see if there is another relevant NOC for you. So the NOC 6641 the food counter attendance kitchen helper in related occupations, the 6661 the like duty cleaners, 6611 cashiers, 6622 grocery clerks, 7611 construction trades, and 8612 landscaping.
As you can see the list predominately covers NOC C and D as they are considered low skilled and the ones that are not service Canada seen an influx of LMIA applications with these NOCS.
So if you are an individual thinking of working in Canada or an employer offering a job in the above mentioned categories it is best not to apply as Service Canada will not issue a LMIA.
If you have questions about LMIA or the process gives us a call, we will more than happy to help.
