Manitoba off to a great start for 2018 with its Express Entry Pathway and Provincial Nominee Program

The province of Manitoba is off to a wonderful start for 2018 with their new Express Entry pathway as well as their existing provincial nominee program. Manitoba is trying its best to invite eligible candidates in order to meet their provincial labour market needs and to make their economy stronger. So far, based on the January 11 draw, the new Express Entry pathway has invited approximately 155 candidates to apply for a provincial nomination. In order to better understand how candidates are chosen, in this article, I will address more information pertaining to the new Express Entry pathway and how it affects Manitoba’s Provincial Nominee Program for future candidates.

Manitoba Now One of Eight Provinces to have an Express Entry Pathway

The implementation of the new Express Entry pathway, as well as the new In-Demand Occupation List, was part of the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) that was revealed in November of 2017. Now, the province of Manitoba is included in the eight provinces that currently have an Express Entry pathway. Keep in mind, the Express Entry pathway is aligned with the Provincial Nominee Program that each province has. It is also important to mention that most of them do not require a family member to be living in the province.

Other Options in the Provincial Nominee Program

With the 155 candidates that were invited to apply under the new Express Entry pathway, there are many other candidates that were invited to apply under different programs in the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP). Just to put things into perspective, the lowest-ranked candidate that was invited to apply under the new Express Entry pathway scored 560. Another 191 candidates were then invited to apply under the Skilled Workers in Manitoba pathway and the lowest-ranked candidate that was invited to apply scored 647. The same score was given to the lowest-ranked candidate that was invited to apply under the Strategic Recruitment Initiative through the Skilled Workers Overseas Stream.

There were approximately 143 Letters of Advice to Apply (LAAs) issued to qualified and skilled workers that are currently living outside of Manitoba who met the following criteria:

  • Having a family member that lives in Manitoba;
  • Having a past education or previous work experience in Manitoba;
  • A minimum of 6 months of recent work experience in an occupation listed in the new In-Demand Occupations list; and,
  • A minimum language ability of CLB 5 (unless work experience is in a regulated occupation, then the minimum CLB would be 7 or a compulsory trade which would be a minimum of CLB 6)
