Sponsoring Your Spouse Outside Of Canada
If you are interested in sponsorship for your spouse, there are conditions to be aware of.
You are only able to sponsor a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner if you are able to show that you are residing or will be residing in Canada once your loved one get permanent residence. In addition you have to:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Be 18 years or older
- Sign an undertaking promising to provide for the sponsored person’s basic requirements.
- Sign an agreement with your spouse or partner
- Cannot be on social assistance or bankrupt
- Cannot have a previous undertaking for a spouse or partner, where three years have not passed since the sponsored spouse became permanent resident.
- Cannot be convicted of a violent criminal offence or a an offence of sexual nature
- You have to wait at least 5 years to sponsor a spouse or partner, if you were previously sponsored as a spouse or partner yourself.
It is extremely important that you provide proper documentation to prove the genuineness of your relationship as CIC takes fraudulent applications extremely seriously. You can provide documents like,
- statements of any bank accounts together,
- any mortgages or leases together and/or
- any proof of children you may have together.
More importantly, if you are living outside of Canada, you need to show your intention to return Canada. You may show this by any property or job offer you may have in Canada.
Also note that there is no financial threshold for sponsoring your spouse.
