In the past, the only option was the parent-grandparent sponsorship; however, now individuals can choose to apply for the super visa. For the super visa application, it is very important to understand and recognize the requirements from the sponsor as well as from the applicant. Therefore, in this article, I will address some useful and beneficial application tips when applying for a Super Visa to Canada.

Eligibility Requirements for Super Visa

If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, then you are on the right track to being eligible to apply for the Super Visa for your parent or grandparent. In addition, you must also meet the minimum low income cut off. It is important to note that the minimum necessary income is determined and based on your current family size and the amount of individuals you intend on sponsoring to Canada. The amount of individuals will be either one or two – i.e. your parent or grandparent and their spouse or common-law partner. Keep in mind, for this specific type of Immigration application, dependents are not allowed to apply. In other words, any dependent child of the parent or grandparent would not be eligible to apply and, thus, cannot be included in the application for Super Visa.

The super visa application is beneficial in that it is intended to be a multi-entry visa and provides multiple entries for the sponsored individual(s) for up to 10 years. This can essentially help reunite family members for a longer period than just six months.

Who is Eligible to Apply for a Super Visa

You must either be the parent or grandparent of a permanent resident of Canada or a Canadian citizen. It is worth mentioning again, as previously mentioned, you cannot include your dependent children in the super visa application. You are permitted to only include your spouse or common-law partner to accompany you.

How to Apply for a Super Visa

In order to apply for a super visa, you must accumulate the appropriate documentation and information to support the application. In order for the application to be a strong and successful application, it is best to submit the following:

• A letter of invitation from your Canadian citizen or permanent resident child or grandchild residing in Canada.
• Include your child or grandchild’s family composition, i.e. dependents, including spouse, children, or other relatives that are financially dependent on your child or grandchild
• Submit one or more of the following documents to prove that your child or grandchild meets the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) minimum: – Original letter from employer stating title, job description and salary. – Employment insurance pay stubs. – If self-employed, a letter from an accountant confirming annual income. – Proof of other sources of income (pension statement, investments, etc). – Most recent copy of the Notice of Assessment (Taxes). – Most recent copy of the T4 or T1.
• Evidence of the parent or grandparent relationship to the Canadian citizen or permanent resident child or grandchild you wish to visit, i.e. birth certificate, baptismal certificate or other official document indicating you as a parent or grandparent
• Sufficient proof that you have obtained private medical insurance with the validity of one year from a Canadian insurance company and that: – Covers health care, hospitalization, and repatriation, – Provides a minimum coverage of $100, 000, as well as – Valid for each entry to Canada and be available for review by the Immigration officer.

Please note that in addition to the above mentioned supporting documents, the parent or grandparent may also be requested to have their biometric fingerprints and photo taken in person at a biometric collection service point. Additionally, they may also be required to undergo a medical exam.

What to Consider When Applying for Super Visa

It is always important to remember that the decision is made by Citizenship and Immigration Canada officers. Furthermore, the immigration officers must consider a variety of factors prior to coming to a decision on your super visa application. Therefore, in order to guarantee that your intentions are only to visit Canada and not to overstay your authorized period of travel, you must indicate that you are a real visitor who will leave Canada.

More specifically, an Immigration officer will analyze the following factors when you apply for a super visa:

• Ties to your home country or country of residence.
• Purpose of your visit to Canada.
• Your family and finances.
• Economic & political stability of your home country or country of residence, and
• An invitation from a Canadian child or grandchild.
