If you are filing a Spousal Sponsorship Application and your dependent has a dependent of their own then you would need to meet the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) requirements. For example, if your sponsoring your wife and your wife’s child has a child of their own then you need to meet the LICO requirements. When submitting a spousal application and your spouse is not employed perhaps they are studying or whatever the reason may be the sponsor does not need to meet LICO requirements. The undertaking is just to show that you have the intensions or promise to provide for the basic needs for the person you are sponsoring (spouse, parent, child). The purpose of the undertaking is to avoid the person you are sponsoring to be a financial burden on Canadian society. Canada wants to ensure the person you are sponsoring is a productive member of the society and does not rely on social assistance from the government. Should the sponsored individual go on social assistance during the time of your undertaking then as the sponsor you would have to pay back the government the amount that is owed. Depending on who you are sponsoring the undertaking varies. When sponsoring a spouse you are responsible for them for three years while sponsoring a parent you are responsible for them for 20 years. Remember the time varies and can change at any time please see CIC website for latest update information.
