A minor child is someone who is under the age of 18 and if they wish to travel to Canada they have to follow the same rules to enter Canada as a visitor. If a minor tries to enter Canada without the proper documents or are with adults other than their parents or legal guardians then they will examined more closely to ensure they are not runaway children or missing child. Depending who the child is travelling with determines what type of documents they need to carry with them.
Minor Child Travelling Alone:
If the child is travelling alone they need to have their own passport, copy of birth certificate, a letter in English or French that authorizes the child to travel on its own and including detailed information of the parent or guardian and the persons that are taking care of the child in Canada (telephone number, address, name etc.).
Minor Child Travelling with one Parent:
If the child is travelling with one parent, then ensure you have the child’s passport, copy of birth certificate, and an authorization letter from the parent that is not travelling including name, address, telephone number, and a photocopy of passport or national identity card.
