If you are planning to study in Canada the first step would be applying at a college or university you would like to attend in Canada. Upon receiving the acceptance letter you are eligible to apply for the Study Permit, if you do not have the acceptance letter from the designated learning institution you cannot apply for the Study Permit.
Aside from the acceptance letter there are other requirements you need to meet such as showing sufficient amount of money in your account for the time period you are staying in Canada. The immigration officer wants to see you are able to survive while you are in Canada, such as able to pay for your transportation, food, rent and any family members joining you. Also, you cannot be inadmissible to Canada meaning you cannot have a criminal record on file that can range from a minor to major offense such as DUI, misdemeanor, felony, misrepresentation etc. If you do have a criminal record you may eligible to apply for Temporary Resident Permit or Criminal Rehabilitation.
Another important factor to obtain the Study Permit you must show your intensions to Canada are only temporary meaning you will exit once your Study Permit expires. This can be done by showing ties to your home country such as assets, family obligations, bank accounts, work etc.
