A study permit is simply a document that allows an individual to study in Canada. This permit must be obtained by anyone who is not a permanent resident or citizen of Canada, but wishes to study in Canada. Canadian study permits do not allow entry to Canada at a port-of-entry. If the applicant is not from a visa-exempt country, he/she must also obtain a Temporary Resident Visa in order to legally enter and be in Canada during the duration of their study period. Before applying for a study permit, an individual must ensure that they have obtained a formal letter of acceptance from Canadian college, university, or some other accredited educational institution. If a letter of acceptance is not obtained, the individual will not be issued a study permit. Also, an individual applying for a study permit must understand that at the end of their study period, he/she is expected to leave Canada. When obtaining the study permit it is a requirement to show an individual’s intention of leaving when the study period ends.
In the past, in order to work and study in Canada, individuals needed permits for each thing. A study permit to study in Canada and a work permit that authorizes an individual to work legally within Canada. Now, as long as an individual has a study permit, they are legally allowed to work part-time in Canada. In order for this to apply, the individual must be enrolled in full-time studies. Part-time consists of a maximum of 20 hours per week. However, during scheduled breaks the individual is entitled to work full-time (40 hours a week) without obtaining a work permit. This authorization for work in is called an Off-Campus Work Permit. It is only available for full-time students with valid work permits in Canada. You can also obtain a On Campus Work Permit.
Therefore, a study permit is a piece document that entitles an individual to study in Canada. This permit must be acquired by individuals who are not permanent residents or citizens of Canada, but want to study in Canada. Canadian study permits do not provide entry to Canada.
