What is a Study Permit?

A study permit is simply a document that allows an individual to study in Canada. This permit must be obtained by anyone who is not a permanent resident or citizen of Canada, but wishes to study in Canada. Canadian study permits do not allow entry to Canada at a port-of-entry. If the applicant is not from a visa-exempt country, he/she must also obtain a Temporary Resident Visa in order to legally enter and be in Canada during the duration of their study period. Before applying for a study permit, an individual must ensure that they have obtained a formal letter of acceptance from Canadian college, university, or some other accredited educational institution. If a letter of acceptance is not obtained, the individual will not be issued a study permit. Also, an individual applying for a study permit must understand that at the end of their study period, he/she is expected to leave Canada. When obtaining the study permit it is a requirement to show an individual’s intention of leaving when the study period ends.

Part-time consists of a maximum of 20 hours per week. However, during scheduled breaks the individual is entitled to work full-time (40 hours a week) without obtaining a work permit. This authorization for work in is called an Off-Campus Work Permit. It is only available for full-time students with valid work permits in Canada. You can also obtain a On Campus Work Permit.
