Work Permit Basics

Work Permit Basics

Depending on your unique situation, if you wish to work in Canada, a Labour Market Opinion may first be required. Once you have obtained a positive Labour Market Opinion, the next step is to apply for your actual work permit or work visa. Once you have determined whether or not you require a Labour Market Opinion, you can apply for your work permit and join the millions of successful Canadians in the Canadian Job Market.

How do I apply for a work permit?

This depends on whether you are applying for the first time outside of Canada or are applying for the first time within Canada. People applying for a work permit for the first time or those who currently reside outside of Canada will need to apply for a work permit by submitting an application to the appropriate visa processing centre responsible for their country of citizenship. For example, an Indian from Chennai who is currently in Canada on a visitor visa will still need to apply to the Canadian Consulate in Delhi when applying for his or her first work permit.

What documents do I need to work in Canada?

Typically, depending on the nature of your work and whether or not you meet the criteria for various exemptions in the rules, you/your employer will first need to obtain a positive Labour Market Opinion. Once you have obtained this, you will need to complete the appropriate forms depending on your unique situation as well as provide proof that you are qualified for the position being offered.

Documents you can provide to demonstrate qualifications are:

  • Educational documents
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Your Resume

How long does it take to get a work permit in Canada?

Processing times are unique for each embassy or consulate responsible for processing your application. Further, average processing times are applicable for applications considered to be complete. If you do not provide the right or sufficient documentation, processing times could be much longer than what is average.

Can I bring my family?

If you are successful in obtaining a work permit, depending on the duration of the permit, your partner could also be entitled to their own work permit based on yours. As well you can also bring dependents with you, provided they meet the basic criteria to travel.

What happens once I am able to work in Canada?

Once you obtain your valid work permit, you are entitled to work in Canada for the duration of the permit. Should your employment continue beyond this date, you are also able to extend your stay in Canada.
