NAFTA Work Permit Application

North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is a Free Trade Agreement between Canada, U.S. and Mexico entered into with the intention to liberalize trade between the countries. NAFTA deals with temporary entry to selected business persons who are citizens of Canada, U.S. or Mexico and who are involved in trade or business or investment activities. NAFTA eliminates the need for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) for business persons and Work Permit for professionals and Intra-Company Transferees.

To determine if you fall under the NAFTA Work Permit you can look at the NAFTA Occupation List which is provided on our website or you can visit the government website for the latest updated information. If your occupation does not fall under the NAFTA Occupation list there still may be other routes available to you to getting a Work Visa to Canada.

The benefit of a NAFTA Work Permit is essentially that you can go to the Port of Entry and obtain the Work Permit same day as long as the officers are satisfied with the documents. Off course if you are Mexican you need to take an additional step and apply for the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). The Temporary Resident Visa is required by individuals who are not exempt from the Visitor Visa such as Mexico. Therefore, as the Mexican applicant you need to meet the requirements for TRV and NAFTA Work Permit to be successful in entry into Canada.
