Super Visa vs Visitor Visa Video

The main difference between Super Visa and the Visitor Visa is the duration period. Under the Super Visa only Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents can apply for their parents or grandparents, while with the Visitor Visa also known as Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) anyone can apply such as tourists, visitors that have friends or family in Canada etc. Super Visas are granted for maximum of 10 years and every two years the visitor has to exit Canada and can re-enter without having to reapply because it is a multiple entry visa. The Visitor Visa on the hand is issued for 6 months or less though it is multiple entry visa it is issued for far less time then the Super Visa.

Both a Visitor Visa and a Super Visa share a common trait: both are temporary. Despite the Super Visa allowing extended periods of visitation, the stay in Canada is still limited and both applicants of Visitor and Super Visas must intend to return to their country of origin.

Also, both these applications require an Invitation Letter from the host. For the Super Visa it has to be either the child or grandchild, while with the Visitor Visa it can be anyone such as friend, family, co-worker. If you are coming for tourism and have no one in Canada then you do not require a Letter of Invitation.

For the Super Visa there is also a Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) requirement while with a Visitor Visa there is no financial requirement. So depending on your family you can determine how much income you need to show to be able to invite your parents or grandparents. For example, husband and wife with two children who would like to apply for both grandparents that would be a family of six (husband + wife + two children + grandpa +grandma =six). So that means you have to meet the LICO requirements for a family of six (see LICO chart on CIC website for latest information). Even though there is financial requirement for the Visitor Visa but there is still a rule of thumb to show some financial means that you are able to support yourself during your time of stay in Canada. Also, for the Super Visa there is mandatory medical coverage required for at least one year, while Visitor Visa does not have this requirement.
