TRP Application Port of Entry Interview Tips Video
TRP Application Port of Entry Interview Tips
If you decide to do a Temporary Resident Permit application at the Port of Entry ensure you bring all your documentation that is required for that application. When arriving at the port of entry you will face an immigration officer that will ask if you have an inadmissibility issue to Canada. Obviously, you have to be honest to the immigration officer about your past criminal record as lying to an immigration officer can put another record on your file for misrepresenting yourself.
So when having a criminal record you need to have all your documents ready for the immigration officer to review. The immigration officer will ask about your offence such what the offence on record is or was, what you completed for it, if it has been served and completed, why you want to travel to Canada etc..
In order to have a successful entry into Canada it is recommended by going in prepared and having all your supporting documents ready for the immigration officer at the border to review. The most important part is demonstrating regret, remorse and growth, this can be done by explaining your situation and what you have learned from your past experience. The immigration officer will assess your situation and determine the risk versus the need. The risk is to possible Canadians and the need of your travel. In order for the officer to issue a Temporary Resident Permit your need to travel needs to outweigh the possible risks. So when you’re answering these questions make sure you demonstrate remorse, regret, and growth.
An example would be to say I have learnt a lot from the experience, I have a daughter that looks up to me, I regret the choices I have made in the past etc. Mention your accomplishments since that offence, like you got a promotion at your new job, etc.
Another, important aspect of getting a TRP issued at the border is why you want to come to Canada is it leisure or business? Based on your reason for travel the immigration officer will assess need versus risk. We get a lot of clients that want to travel to Canada for fishing or hunting which is fine but the immigration officer will base its decision based on the number of offences you have on record, how long ago it was, what you completed for it and why want to travel to Canada. If the need of you being in Canada outweighs the risk then you are issued a TRP, but if the officer believes you can be potential risk then you will be denied entry. Persons that travel for business trips have a higher chance of success rather than individuals that want to travel for leisure but either way for both your need to travel as to outweigh the risk.
