Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada can sponsor their conjugal partner under the family class sponsorship in Canada for permanent residency. However, you must meet the specific eligibility criteria in order to do so. The Canadian government introduced new spousal sponsorship packages effective December 15, 2016. The changes were introduced to combat backlogs, produce fairness and equality for all Canadians and to tackle conditional permanent residency. Along with these new changes, there are still things that remain the same with regards to conjugal sponsorship. For instance, when you sponsor any individual under the family class, you are automatically taking responsibility for that individual. In simple terms, depending on the type of sponsorship under the family class category, you will sign an undertaking promising to provide financial support for basic necessities.
