Federal Skilled Trades Program Defining a Valid Job Offer

In order to determine whether or not your job offer is a valid one, compare it to the various situations below. You may use this checklist to help you make certain you meet the requirements. Without a valid job offer of employment, your application will not be assessed.

You are currently working in Canada on a work permit:

  • Your work permit was issued by CIC based on a positive Labour Market Opinion from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC),
  • Your work permit is valid when you submit your application for permanent residence,
  • You are currently working for an employer specified on your work permit,
  • You have an offer of employment for continuous, full-time work for a total period of at least one year in the skilled trade occupation specified in your
  • Your offer of employment has been made by up to two employers who are specified on the work permit

Note, your offer of employment must also be valid and you must be authorized to work in Canada at the time your permanent resident visa is issued.

You are currently working in Canada in a job that is exempt from the Labour Market Opinion requirement

  • Your work permit is valid when you submit your application for permanent residence,
  • You are currently working for an employer specified on your work permit,
  • You have an offer of employment for continuous, full-time work for a total period of at least one year in the skilled trade occupation specified in your application
  • Your offer of employment has been made by up to two employers who are specified on the work permit

Note, your offer of employment must also be valid and you must be authorized to work in Canada at the time your permanent resident visa is issued.

You do not currently have a work permit and are not authorized to work in Canada

  • You have an offer of employment for continuous, full-time employment for a total period of at least one year in the skilled trade occupation specified in your application
  • Your prospective employer has obtained a positive Labour Market Opinion

You either hold a work permit or are authorized to work in Canada, and the circumstances noted above do not apply

  • You are currently not working for your employer specified on your work permit, or you do not have an offer of employment for continuous, full-time work for a total period of at least one year
  • You have an offer of employment for continuous, full-time employment for a total period of at least one year in the skilled trade occupation specified in your application once a permanent resident visa is issued from up to two employers
  • Your prospective employer has obtained a positive Labour Market Opinion
