In this article, I will address a few popular questions and answers for the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) in Canada and some important information to consider if you are applying under this program for permanent residency in Canada. The Yukon Nominee Program is an economic immigration program that assists the territory of Yukon to meet its labour market needs. If you feel as though you would be eligible to apply under this program, I suggest you read our article on “Basics of the Yukon Nominee Program” before reading this question and answer article. The intention of this article is meant to clarify any misunderstanding or confusion with regards to the Yukon Nominee Program in Canada.

Q: What is the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP)?

A: The Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) is an economic immigration program that permits foreign nationals to be nominated by the territory of Yukon in order to fill any economic and labour market needs they may have. This program also facilitates the territory of Yukon to nominate skilled foreign nationals with qualified work experience and who also qualify under the established criteria to work in the Yukon and obtain permanent residency in Canada. The YNP is a partnership between the government of the Yukon and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Q: How does the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) work?

A: The Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) has four different pathways that you may pursue, which are:

  • Skilled Worker Program
  • Express Entry
  • Critical Impact Worker Program
  • Business Nominee Program

For more information pertaining to these pathways please kindly read our article “Basics of the Yukon Nominee Program.”

Q: What are the eligibility requirements for employers under the Critical Impact Worker stream?

A: It is useful to recognize that not only can skilled foreign nationals participate in this stream but Yukon employers may also participate. The Yukon employer requirements are as follows:

  • The Yukon employer must be either a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
  • Yukon employers must have a registered and operating business, for the submitted application, in the Yukon for at least one year full-time
  • Yukon employers must abide by the minimum requirements of territorial labour standards
  • Yukon employers must provide a copy of their business license and be registered within the Yukon’s corporate registry
  • Yukon employers of skilled foreign nationals who are exempt from the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) process will be required to submit information about the offer of employment as well as pay the compliance fee
  • Yukon employers must provide health insurance similar to what a Yukon resident receives under the Health Care Insurance Plan Act
  • Yukon employers must provide the median wage for the specific NOC code

Q: What kind of documents do I need to submit if I am applying through the Skilled Worker stream?

A: There are many important documents that you must submit if you are applying through the Skilled Worker stream. However, before I mention the specific documents, it is important to note that all documents that are not in either English or French (Canada’s official languages) must be certified and translated. One of the most important documents that must be submitted are reference letters from your Supervisor or Human Resources officer. The letters must abide by the following criteria:

  • Supervisor or Human Resources officer name and title
  • Contact information of the Supervisor or Human Resources officer including phone number, email and company website
  • Be on company letterhead
  • Show start and end date of intended employment
  • Job title and description
  • Job duties

Other documents that you must submit are:

  • Income tax documents
  • Pay stubs/slips
  • Passport data page
  • Original language test results (CELPIP, IELTS, and/or TEF)
  • Work permit
  • Spouse documents such as marriage certificate
  • Common-law documents such as declaration of common-law union
  • Dependent documents such as birth certificate

Q: How do I apply for the Yukon Business Nominee Program?

A: In order to successfully apply for the Yukon Business Nominee Program, you must ensure you are providing and submitting all of the required documentation and information. Additionally, you must fill out and complete the Yukon Business Nominee Program application form and either mail the application or submit it in person. Keep in mind, the forms must be original and cannot be copies; if they are, they will not be accepted. The expected processing time for these applications are approximately eight to ten weeks.

Q: After I apply for the Yukon Business Nominee Program, what happens to my application?

A: For all applications under the Yukon Business Nominee Program that are eligible and meet the requirements set out by the government of the Yukon, they will be placed in a pool of eligible candidates and thus they will select potential candidates. Please note applications cannot be held for more than six months. Therefore, if you do not hear any response for six months or more, you must reapply. Additionally, only potential candidates that are selected will be requested to submit additional documentation to validate the information within the original application. If the requested documentation is satisfactory, they will be requested to attend an in-person interview in the Yukon.
