How to Apply for the Live-in Caregiver Program

Apply for the Live-in Caregiver Program

Live-in caregivers are individuals who are qualified to provide care for children, elderly persons or persons with disabilities. These caregivers work out of the home of their employer and work without supervision. There are several steps to qualify as a live-in caregiver in Canada. Both the applicant and their employer must meet these requirements. In order to qualify, the applicant will need:

1. A Positive Labour Market Opinion From an Employer in Canada

Your employer will need to submit an application for a Labour Market Opinion to the temporary foreign worker unit. Once submitted, the unit will assess the job offer, employment contract and conditions of employment to ensure it meets provincial standards. It will also take into consideration whether or not there are other Canadians or permanent residents who are or are not readily available to fill the position.

2. A Written Contract From the Employer

You and your employer must sign a written employment contract. This will ensure that there is a fair working arrangement between you. The contract should outline your duties, hours of work, wages, accommodation arrangement, holiday and sick leave etc.

3. Successful Completion of The Equivalent of a Canadian Secondary School Education

As the education system is not unilateral across Canada and provincial differences exist, there is no set number of years of education that an applicant is required or has to complete. In most provinces, however, it takes 12 years to obtain a high school diploma. An immigration officer assessing your application will let you know if more information is required of you.

4. At Least Six Months’ Training or at Least One Year of Full-Time Paid Work Experience

You need to have worked for one year, including at least six months of continuous employment for the same employer. This work experience must be in a field or occupation-specific to what you will do as a live-in caregiver. Further, you must have obtained it within the last three years prior to your application.

5. Working Knowledge of English or French

You must be able to speak, read and understand either English or French. This is essential when it comes to your ability to function in your employer’s home. For example, you must be able to understand labels on medication or communicate with emergency personnel should the need ever arise.

6. A Work Permit Before You Enter Canada

In order to take part in the live-in caregiver program, you will need to make an application for a work permit from outside of Canada. Should your application be successful, you will receive a letter to this effect which you will present at the port of entry to obtain your work permit.
