Working on Campus without a Work Permit

Did you know that as a Study Permit holder you can work on campus without a Work Permit? But in order to do so you need to meet certain requirements. Some of these requirements include having a valid study permit, be full time student, be enrolled in a designated learning institution and studying a program that leads to a degree or diploma or certificate that is longer than 6 months. Upon meeting those requirements you can work up to 20 hours per week during your school year and you can work full-time during your holidays such as winter or spring break. If you no longer meet the Study Permit requirements you have to stop working immediately on the day you no longer meet the eligibility, for example, you are not longer a full time student.

Another requirement would be applying for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) if you want to work as a student in Canada. The social insurance number allows you to receive benefits and services from government programs. For the SIN to be granted on your Study Permit it must indicate that you are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week off-campus or full-time during the holiday breaks. Also, it must indicate that you can accept employment on or off campus when meeting the eligibility criteria mentioned above. If this information is not indicated on your Study Permit than you must request for amendments to your Study Permit prior to applying for the SIN. Remember there is no fee to make this change on your application. If your Study Permit clearly states you cannot Work Off Campus but you have changed your program of study then you must apply to change to change the conditions of your Study Permit and pay the required fees.
