More than 35 million people visit Canada yearly for all corners of the world. Some come for the cultural and tourist allures, and others come to visit family and friends. Whatever your reason, depending on where you live, you may require a Temporary Resident Visa in order to enter Canada temporarily. Temporary Resident Visas are commonly referred to as Visitor Visas.

Before you book your tickets, you first need to determine whether or not you require a Temporary Resident Visa or TRV. Not everyone requires one, but depending on your country of origin, you just might. For example, a tourist from the United Kingdom does not require a TRV to enter Canada and can come and remain in Canada for up to six months at a time. On the other hand, a tourist from Ukraine does require a TRV and will need to have one approved before they can even board the plane to Canada.

A list of countries that are exempt from a TRV can be easily found on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website. If your country of origin appears on this list, you are in luck and do not require a TRV. However, if your country of origin does not appear on this list, you will definitely need to acquire your TRV prior to travel.

Few Basic Criteria That You Should be Aware of:

• You must have a valid travel document
• Be in good health
• Have ties to your home country
• Have sufficient funds for your stay

Astonishingly, a TRV is, in reality, not very easy to acquire. You must satisfy an immigration officer of many factors above and beyond the basic criteria of the application. You will need to demonstrate that you have strong ties to your home country, in essence, demonstrating that you will return to your home country once your intended temporary status in Canada has expired and that your visit is truly temporary in nature.

For example, ties to your home country can be in the form of family residing in your home country, employment, ownership of property and/or assets or investments.

You will apply to an embassy or consulate based on your country of origin or residence. Depending on where you reside, unique documentation may be required beyond what Citizenship and Immigration Canada requirements. Once your application has been submitted, you will need to wait for the processing time of that particular embassy or consulate in order to acquire the results of your application. Unfortunately, an application does not guarantee success and nor does an approved visa guarantee entry into Canada. You will always need to satisfy an immigration officer at the port of entry that you indeed meet the criteria.
