How to Apply for Express Entry?

What is the Express Entry

Express Entry is a new system created to manage application under the economic immigration programs. These programs include Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program and Canadian Experience Class.

There are two steps required in applying for Express Entry.

Creating an online Express Entry Profile

Anyone looking to apply under express entry need to complete an online Express Entry profile. Within this profile the individual is required to fill out forms that will provide information regarding their language ability, skills, education and work experience. The criteria for express entry is based on one of the federal immigration programs which include Federal skilled Worker Program, Federal skilled Trades Program or Canadian Experience Class.

There is no deadline on completing the profile and neither is there a cap on how many people can apply for express entry. People who meet the criteria will be placed into a pool of candidates. Then candidates will picked from that pool by the Government of Canada, provincial / territorial governments and Canadian employers. Candidates that have the highest scores will be issued an Invitation to Apply for Permanent Residence.

Invitation to Apply (ITA)

Candidates in the express entry are ranked against other candidates on the bases of point system called Comprehensive ranking System. The score given under the CRS will be based on factors such as skills, work experience, language ability and education. Once a candidate receives an invitation to apply for permanent residence, he/she will 60 days to submit the application along with all the required documentation. Once the application is submitted, CIC will process the application within 6 months. This 6 month processing time begins on the day when CIC confirms that a person has submitted a complete permanent residence application online.

A candidate can stay in the pool for up to 12 months. Those who don’t receive an invitation to apply can submit a new profile after 12 months. While having a job offer from an employer in Canada is an asset however it’s not a requirement for candidates.

The application for Permanent Residence is submitted electronically on the CIC website.
