When applying for Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) the immigration officer looks at the following when issuing a TRP:

• drugs or alcohol involved (serious offense in Canada)
• your pattern of criminal behaviour
• completion of sentence
• fines paid
• restitution made
• reason for travel to Canada (business or leisure)
• what you have learned from that event

There are many factors involved when an immigration officer assesses your situation to ensure the need of you entering Canada outweighs the risks. Having all your supporting documents ready at the port of entry is very helpful for the immigration officer to make its decision.
