Therefore, in this article, I will address which entrepreneurs and self-employed persons need to obtain a work permit to work in Canada and what options are available to these individuals.

Which Entrepreneurs & Self-Employed Persons Need to Obtain a Work Permit

The government of Canada has recently stated that there are specific categories of self-employed individuals and entrepreneurs that may be able to obtain a work permit prior to becoming a permanent resident of Canada. This is an important update as these individuals often have to wait until their permanent residency is approved in order to work. If the individual has not received permanent residency in Canada yet; however, they have received a nomination under a self-employed or a business category, then a C11 work permit may be issued. A C11 work permit intended for individuals who have a permanent residency application that is being processed. Similarly, it is also intended for individuals with dual intent; dual intent means that they would like to seek status as a worker in Canada and then proceed to gain permanent residency in Canada as well. This is extremely beneficial for the self-employed individual or entrepreneur as it can help them gain early entry into Canada as well as early entry into the Canadian labour market.

A: The destination of where an applicant submits their work permit application entirely depends on where they live and their nationality. It is important to note that individuals that do not require a visa to enter Canada may apply for most work permits at the port of entry.
